Epic Project Post 3: Getting ready to cut

After cello lessons, I got the fabric back out and started doing more layouts.

Fabric 2 went faster than Fabric 1.

So did Fabric 3. I think it’s because I had more “slush space” for both of them.

Nine hours in, everything re-folded and put away for the night. Note that I bought a mat & rotary cutter on the way to cello lessons that night just for this project.

9 hours of work.
$30 in fabric, fusible web and glue.
$25 for a rotary cutter & mat.
Not even half way done. Not even 1/4 of the way done yet.
Epic. Project.

The Epic Project – Post 2: Pattern Layouts

Four hours into the project, I’m ready to start applying fusible web to the back of the fabric we picked.

3.5 hours after that, fusible web had been applied to all the fabrics. All the pattern pieces were cut out, and I’d finished laying out the pieces that needed to be cut out of the main fabric, though it was a close fit because it turned out my print wasn’t as wide as the pattern was expecting. Good thing I bought an extra half yard of fabric.

And the other table I was using for all this, the folding table looked like this:

I stopped and cleaned everything up for the evening.

Total project time: 8 hours.

The Epic Project – Post 1: Fusible Web

Step 4:
Now I start trying to figure out the fusible web and what the heck it is and does. It doesn’t take long – maybe 10 minutes on the internet and a quick read of the directions that came with my massive quantity of fusible web (12.5 yards, remember?)

The pattern & the fusible web both recommend test swatches. 40 minutes after the cardboard was punched out…

a successful sample with all three fabrics.

How Did You Get Here?

I like looking in the search term part of the referer statistics, mostly because I wonder what prompted some of them. Like “king india and camel with elephant,” what does that even mean? I usually plug these back into Google to figure out how people got here. Most of the time I can’t imagine how many pages people dug through to find me.

Today I found one where I’m the top non-paid spot though. Try it! No, you don’t have to, but I wonder who was looking for: Yarn Eurostar from London and wound up here. I mean, I did knit (with yarn) on the Eurostar, but I’ve never given much thought to it again. Were they looking for a model Eurostar made of yarn do you suppose? Is there a pattern for that?

The Epic Project – Post 0 – Getting Started

My daughter received a huge gift from the HH™’s family: a large armoire for her American Girl doll. Only it wasn’t a finished thing – it’s a project that needs assembly by an adult such as (gulp) me.

The Kid™ is terribly excited to have this done and put Kit & Kit’s clothes in the box, but first I have to assemble supplies and put the armoire together.

Step 1:
The Kid™ and I spend 90 minutes in the fabric store picking out fabrics, getting them cut, and trying to figure out how to buy 12.5 yards of fusible web, which I am not even sure what is, entirely.

1.5 hours of project time in, and all we have done is bought supplies. It is at this moment that I fully understand that this project is no small undertaking for me.

Step 2:
Yesterday, since I had the day off and the Christmas decorations are all down, I finally opened the kit. I pulled out the instruction book and start reading.

Step 3:
90 minutes later, I have accomplished… punching out the main exterior cardboard and I think I have a good sense of how the exterior is to be covered and constructed.

Total project time: 3 hours and counting….

The inaugural wearing of the Fawkes Socks I knit this year – I wore them to the funeral the Dumbledore in my life. It felt like a most appropriate way to break them in and to say goodbye.

I am wanting to post some pictures of some knitted things but I dare not do so until the recipient receives them. I mailed them December 2nd, I hope they arrive soon. :p
I’m also behind due to attending a funeral and three Christmas program performances. So glad that week is over – it should be smoother sailing from here on out.
